High Street

Street guide, Selsey

The main commercial street in Selsey, running north to south through the town centre. The High Street has the practical, unfussy character of a working coastal town, with shops serving the everyday needs of the community rather than catering to tourists. A butcher, a baker, a pharmacy, charity shops, a post office, a fish and chip shop and various service businesses line the street. The architecture is a mix of Victorian, interwar and postwar buildings, without any particular architectural distinction but with an honest, functional quality. The street narrows at its southern end as it approaches the older part of the town. On busy summer weekends, when the holiday parks are full, the High Street sees a noticeable uplift in footfall.
