Holiday Park Development on the Western Coast
1950s-1960s
In the post-war decades, Selsey's western coastline was developed with caravan and holiday parks that would transform the town's economy. What began as small collections of touring caravans grew into substantial holiday parks offering static caravans, chalets and entertainment facilities. Bunn Leisure, which would become the dominant operator, established its first parks during this period. The holiday parks brought seasonal employment and a regular influx of visitors to a town that had previously depended almost entirely on fishing. The development changed the character of western Selsey, creating a zone of holiday accommodation quite distinct from the traditional fishing town. The parks became a major part of the local economy, though the seasonal nature of the trade meant that Selsey still experienced a marked contrast between busy summers and quiet winters.
