Shops in Selsey

High street shopping and everyday services

Selsey's High Street is a practical shopping street that serves the everyday needs of a town eight miles from the nearest city. The range of shops reflects the community it serves: mostly independent, mostly functional, with an emphasis on the essentials of daily life rather than luxury goods or fashion.

The High Street has a butcher, a baker, a pharmacy, a post office, charity shops, a newsagent, a convenience store and various service businesses including hairdressers, a dry cleaner and a key cutter. The Co-op provides the main grocery shopping option within the town. For a larger supermarket shop, residents drive to Chichester, where Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose are all available.

Charity shops are well represented and popular with bargain hunters and browsers. The turnover of stock is good, and regular visitors find clothing, books, household items and bric-a-brac at reasonable prices. The charity shops contribute to the social fabric of the town, staffed by volunteers who know their customers and provide a friendly welcome.

The fishing heritage is reflected in the availability of fresh seafood. The fishermen at East Beach sell directly to the public when catches allow, and the local shops stock dressed crab and other products from the fleet. This is a distinctive feature of Selsey's shopping offer that larger towns cannot match.

Selsey faces the same challenges as small-town high streets across England: competition from online retail, the pull of larger shopping centres in Chichester and the changing habits of consumers. But the town's relative isolation works in the High Street's favour. The eight-mile drive to Chichester means that many residents, particularly older people who may not drive, rely on the local shops for their daily needs. This captive market helps sustain businesses that might struggle in a town with better transport links to a larger centre.

The holiday parks bring additional custom during the summer, when visitors buy newspapers, snacks, beach supplies and souvenirs. This seasonal boost supports shops during the busiest months of the year.

For anything beyond everyday essentials, residents look to Chichester, which has a good selection of independent shops, national chains and a retail park on the edge of the city. But for the daily shop, the morning paper, a prescription or a bag of fresh crab, Selsey's High Street serves its community faithfully.
